A new cosmic reality: General Director of RSCC Alexey Volin told how to ensure reliable communications at "Space for People" online marathon
Communication has a major requirement: it must be stable, uninterrupted, and reliable. Alexey Volin, General Director of RSCC, told how the enterprise ensures it at the First National Online Marathon "Space for People". The educational event was held on the eve of Cosmonautics Day, April 11, for promoting achievements in the industry among high school students and students of relevant specialties. The company's General Director connected to the online-event from A.S. Popov Central Museum of Communications.
"Communications must be able to withstand any conditions and impacts that is why it is necessary to be able to reserve channels. It is also extremely important never to rely on only one connection method," said Alexey Volin. — Although fiber-optic provides modern services to over 97% of Russian residents, when we talk about remote areas in Siberia or the Far East, or ships on the Northern Sea Route, we mean using only space communications. In general, only a satellite can operate in 80% of our country's territory."
This also applies to Arctic territories, he added, recalling last year's experiment, in which the icebreaker "50 Years of Victory" set sail to the North Pole with the equipment of RSCC.
"The most accurate "visibility" with full access to our package of services was the Franz Josef Land archipelago, located at 81°n. This is significantly beyond the standard limit of 79 °c. for geostationary satellites and is guaranteed thanks to the powerful energy of RSCC spacecraft," he concluded. Further provision of GEO-satellite communications is impossible, but this gap will soon be eliminated: in 2026-2027, the Express-RV spacecraft constellation will operate in a highly elliptical orbit, and then the entire Arctic zone of the Russian Federation will be covered.
The event was also attended by State Duma Deputy Anton Nemkin, head of the Karachay-Cherkess Republic Rashid Temrezov, Governor of the Omsk Region Vitaly Khotsenko, General Director of Roscosmos Dmitry Bakanov, Director of the Special Astronomical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences Gennady Valyavin. The Digital Russia project, ANO Digital Economy, and the Government of the Karachay-Cherkess Republic with the support of Roscosmos organized the online marathon.
