With satellite in hands: RSCC demonstrates new capabilities of satellite communications ashore Sea of Okhotsk

On July 12, RSCC team together with The Race group of companies successfully field-tested a Russian mobile satellite communication set on the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk. The portable set about 30 kg in weight can be deployed in 10-15 minutes and can be used for setting up communication in contingencies, e.g., during the response to natural disasters, when other means of communication do not work, as well as for tourist groups. Video conferencing was established during the tests with the EMERCOM of the Sakhalin Region and with the Sibir atomic ice-breaker.

The video conference with Igor Yamukov, head of the Chief Department of the EMERCOM of Russia for the Sakhalin Region, was joined by Alexey Volin, Director General of RSCC, Evgeny Buydinov, Deputy Director General, Alexey Vdovin, Head of the Business Development, and his deputy Mikhail Glinka. Eurocom (a RACE Group company) provided the satellite terminal. Ivan Smolentsev, Director General, and Alexander Trifonov, Technical Director, helped mount the device. During the discussion, Igor Yamukov shared that in contingencies, and also on many touristic routes and in remote inhabited locations, setting up communication without a satellite was impossible. The video conference participants also discussed a number of promising joint projects.

"Once again, we have clearly demonstrated that satellite works where there is simply nothing else. We conducted the tests in a place with no electricity or telecommunications, in heavy rain. Satellite communication with the island was working without delays or interferences. This once again proves the demand for our services in all hard-to-reach regions, in rescue operations and for the development of tourism," said Alexey Volin, Director General of RSCC.

Long sea voyages are another example of a situation where communication can only be organized using a satellite link. To demonstrate the capabilities of the RSCC constellation, a second online conference was organized with the Sibir atomic ice-breaker, which was sailing along the Northern Sea Route near Chukotka at the moment. Two satellites of the company – Express-AM5 and Express-AMU3 – were used for this purpose. Internet access on the ice-breaker is organized not only for ship management but also for use by the crew to communicate with their families and loved ones.
