Connecting link: SATCOMRUS 2023 participants to discuss satellite communication development strategies for coming years

On September 28-29, 2023, RSCC is hosting the 28th international conference "SATCOMRUS 2023: Satellite Communications. A Look to the Future". The event will take place in the city of Astrakhan and bring together representatives of satellite operators, telecom companies and broadcasters, spacecraft and equipment manufacturers, and public authorities. This year's conference will be devoted to the prospects of the Russian industry development until 2035 in the current economic and geopolitical environment.

Participants of the plenary session at SATCOMRUS 2023 will discuss how domestic companies can respond to global trends and challenges of the industry. The focus of discussion is placed on flexible payloads, which are now making GEO constellations much more attractable in the face of competition with non-geostationary satellites. One of the hottest topics of recent years will also be addressed: how to build hybrid communication networks and provide seamless connectivity for the users. More and more companies around the world present satellite solutions through ordinary smartphones: Apple, Huawei, Qualcomm and Bullitt are known to have plans and projects. NSR experts predict that this market will bring $66.8 bn of income within the next decade, and the number of subscribers will exceed 350 mn by 2030. But as the technology is deployed, difficulties are also possible – with the frequency band, cost of smartphones with the new feature, antenna power, etc. Speakers will explore ways to address these issues at the event.

At Session 1, representatives of operators and telecom companies will summarize the interim results of the year and discuss the role of satellite communications in the digitalization of the Russian economy, with emphasis on maritime and air logistics. In addition, the speakers will talk about the current state of VSAT networks on satellites with multibeam antennas and new opportunities for media content delivery. Also, the session will raise the question of what changes await the modem market. Analysts estimate that the global telecommunications equipment market only grew 3% in monetary terms in 2022, despite the fact that in 2021 sales were growing at a compound annual rate of about 8%. Not the least factor in this was supply problems. Other reasons will be debated in the discussion.

One of the most important topics of the event will be to ensure the technological sovereignty of our country. Right now, new prospects are opening up for Russian enterprises and freeing up niches previously occupied by foreign companies. A favorable environment is being created for the development of your own innovative projects and solutions. State measures to support the industry also contribute greatly to this. First of all, we are talking about the creation of profiled Industry Competence Centers (ICC), which stimulate the development of domestic technological projects and promote phasing out imports in different areas of the economy. Session 2 participants will talk about the successes of the ICC, as well as about the latest developments in video coding technology, the introduction of precise point positioning equipment in agricultural machinery, and the creation of useful services for companies in the Arctic zone.

The second day of the conference involves business negotiations. Guests of the event will also be able to take part in the cultural program.
