Operational restraints of Express-AM5 satellite

On June 3, 2023 at 04:30 MSK, the liquid cooling circuit of the thermal regulation system of the Express-AM5 satellite (140°E) failed leading to exceeded the operational thermal limits of the spacecraft. RSCC jointly with ISS Reshetnev developed and implemented a series of measures to prevent the satellite overheating and to maintain it operational. Some of the transponders were shut off as advised by the operational documentation and as recommended by the Reshetnev's Chief Designer. After that, the satellite continued to function, but with partly reduced payload. The Express-AM5 kept the ability to provide services to the most of its users. Other clients were suggested to switch over to the Express-AAMU7 (145°E) and the Express-AMU3 (103°E) satellites. Some of them have already switched over. The work with the rest of the users is ongoing.
