RSCC held online Round Table on “The Place of Satellite Technologies in the IoT Market” as part of Russian Week of High Technologies
The Round Table was opened by Roman Antipin, head of Rossvyaz department for development and use of communication networks, who read a welcoming speech on behalf of the head of the Federal Communications Agency Oleg Dukhovnitsky. The message was: “2020 has clearly highlighted the importance of communications and also how critical they are where only satellite communications are available. Therefore, their development and maintenance now require especially close attention. Satellite communications are currently the main type of international and national communications over long and medium distances.”
Evgeny Buidinov, RSCC Deputy General Director for Development and Operation of Communication Systems, moderated the event. He also made a presentation on the forecasts for the advancement and the role of satellite communications in the Internet of Things ecosystem. So, for example, according to RSCC, by 2030 in the territory of Russia from 100 thousand to 1 million devices will operate based on satellite systems. Evgeny Buidinov also spoke about the Company's own test projects in the field of IoT. In 2019, jointly with Germany’s Orbital Systems, RSCC successfully tested the transmission of short messages via a low-flying satellite with an orbital altitude of 550 km using LoRaWAN technology.
Victor Strelets, scientific consultant at Scientific Research Institute of Radio (NIIR) and chairman of IC4 ITU-R, made a report on the international status of standardization of the Internet of Things technology.
In Russia, IoT is to be addressed as part of the IoT / M2M Marathon multi-satellite system, which is to be developed within the Sphere subprogram, drawn up by the Roscosmos State Corporation. Since 2017, VSAT-Tel CJSC has been working on the general architecture of the Marathon IoT system and the payload component base as part of the satellite constellation. Valentin Anpilogov, Deputy General Director of VSAT-Tel CJSC, made a report on the “Marathon IoT multi-satellite data transmission system: satellite Internet of things services and their competitiveness”. He presented the results of an analytical study of modern systems and projects of satellite IoT, and also spoke about the current status of the system implementation. Alexander Kuzovnikov, Deputy General Designer for Space Systems Development, General Design and Spacecraft Control at ISS Reshetnev JSC, continued with the subject and presented an upfront draft of the IoT Marathon system.
Maxim Diordiev, Head of the Directorate for Application of Satellite Systems at Gonets Satellite System JSC, spoke about the place of the Gonets satellite system in the Internet of Things market.
Ivan Kosenkov, Senior Project Manager of the Cluster of Advanced Manufacturing Technologies, Nuclear and Space Technologies of the Skolkovo Foundation, spoke about Russian startups in the IoT field.
Other participants in the discussion included Alexander Salman, General Director of ES-PAS LLC (representative of Kineis in Russia), Sergey Pekhterev, shareholder of Ka-Internet JSC, Oleg Mentus, Deputy Director of NIIR’s Scientific and Technical Center of Space Systems and representatives of mobile operators - Alexey Dyachenko, leading expert on the development of the satellite network of MegaFon PJSC and Vladimir Valkovich, Director for strategy and long-term planning for the development of the network of PJSC VimpelCom.
