The Russian Satellite Communications Company (RSCC) pays much attention to promote information technologies in the Russian educational institutions. Within the context of the national project “Education” implemented by the Russian Government RSCC provided 128 kb/c Internet access to 7 thousand schools and colleges in 62 regions all across Russia.
Resources of three Express-AM satellites enabled to provide Internet access for Russian schools at the earliest possible date to fulfill the requirements set in the Project and do not depend on terrestrial infrastructure. The satellite solution chosen for network deployment helped to cover the huge territory with severe geographic and climatic conditions.
During the period from April to September 2007 RSCC established approximately 100 satellite channels as well as performed tests and access to space segment of more than 6 thousand VSAT terminals all over Russia. VSAT project of this scale is unprecedented for Russia.
As a result of the Project implementation schoolchildren in cities, towns and villages are provided with equal opportunities to use electronic libraries and other modern educational resources, as well as teaches now can upgrade their knowledge.
While implementing this project RSCC has acquired an invaluable experience that will be used for further development of VSAT networks in Russia and beyond to provide the state-of-the-art communications and broadcasting services with high quality and reliability to users in every region despite the existing terrestrial infrastructure.
