In the context of the Federal space program, Project for Renovation of Russian National Satellite Constellation provides for production and launching of five new generation "Express-AM" series communications satellites into geostationary orbit within 2003-2005. The satellites have improved performance characteristics.
The implementation of the Project for Renovation of Russian National Satellite Constellation will allow Russia to retain frequency-in-orbit resource and to extend RSCC technical capabilities considerably.
The satellites will be produced in the context of international cooperation by NPO-PRIKLADNOI MECHANIKI ASSOCIATION named after Academician M. Reshetnev, "Alcatel" and "NEC". The satellites' payload is developed by "Alcatel" company, France, and "NEC" company, Japan. This will ensure compatibility of new spacecraft ("Express-AM": twelve-year guaranteed lifetime in GEO; "Express-A": seven-year guaranteed lifetime in GEO) performance characteristics with the international standards and up-to-date market requirements. The satellites will be equipped with global coverage, contour and steerable-beam antennas. The spacecraft will be launched into orbit by "Proton" launch vehicles equipped with "Briz-M" booster.
The available power of new "Express-AM" spacecraft has been increased significantly in comparison with Russian communications and broadcasting "Express-A" series satellites launched in GEO in 2000. The number of Ku-band transponders has increased as well. It will allow RSCC to provide its Customers with wide range of satellite communication services and, first and foremost, multimedia services.
