As part of Sviaz-ExpoComm 2014, RSCC and its partners, the Altegro Sky Group and the domestic equipment manufacturer, Istar, hosted a seminar on RSCC VSAT Services in Ku- and Кa-bands. The seminar addressed issues relating to satellite-based high-speed broadband access in the Russian Federation. Particular attention was given to the development of networks based on the Ka-band which is a novelty item in Russia.
In partnership with Altegro Sky and Istar, RSCC has developed a ready-made solution supporting the provision of high-speed broadband access via satellite for any user category, e.g. large corporate customers, medium-size companies, and private individuals. In April 2014 the Express-AM5 satellite was commissioned, the first Russian communications and broadcasting satellite equipped with transponders in the new Ка-band. This satellite capacity will serve as the basis for this solution. Currently RSCC is building the ground segment facilities for the high-speed broadband access system. Istar, a Russian manufacturer, presented to the seminar participants its new equipment which makes it possible for mid-size companies to minimize their costs when setting up high-speed networks. Sergey Pekhterev, general director of the Altegro Sky Group, confirmed that Altegro Sky stands ready to provide high-speed broadband access services to both private individuals and corporate customers.
I.N.Chursin, Deputy-Head of Russia’s Federal Communications Agency, said Russia is witnessing the emergence of private broadband access users as a new market segment. The user base currently lists 4.5 thousand households, and the commissioning of the domestic satellite-based system of high-speed broadband access using the Russian Express-AM5 and Express-AM6 satellites will give a fresh impetus to the development of such service in our country.
