RSCC Director-General Yuri Prokhorov is awarded the 2015 RF Government Prize in Science and Technology

By a Decree of October 28, 2015 №2180-p, signed by the Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation, Dmitry A. Medvedev, a group of Russian scientists, engineers and designers was awarded the 2015 Russian Government Prize in the field of science and technology for the development and industrial application of a standard high-performance platform, Express-2000, and the building on its basis of up-to-date, competitive telecommunications satellites.

For more than 30 years, Yuri Prokhorov has been working in the industry of satellite communications and navigation. After graduating MIREA, Yuri Valentinovich has had a long and rewarding career, starting as engineer at Kometa research and production association, heading satellite systems at the Khrunichev Space Center and later becoming RSCC’s top executive.

He supervised the building and operation of modern telecommunication systems in the space industry, including at the Baikonur and Plesetsk Cosmodromes, as well as the development of on-board transponders for small communications satellites. He also led the work on the development and operation of the Russian segment of the Iridium global personal mobile satellite communications system.

Yuri Prokhorov is a member of  government committees on the development of communications and TV and radio broadcasting. He is also on the State Commission for flight-testing of space systems for social, economic, scientific, and commercial applications.

Awarded the title of Honored Space Technology Test Engineer. A winner of 2015 Russian Government Prize  in the field of science and technology.

He has authored a number of papers and articles on the strategic development of satellite communication and broadcasting in Russia.

Since 2008, Yuri Prokhorov has been with the RSCC. During his tenure, he has been personally involved in developing system-wide requirements to the national orbital constellation of civilian communication and broadcasting satellites for the planning periods up to 2015 and 2025. Yuri Prokhorov’s leadership was instrumental in the efforts to build and set up for launch the Express-AM4 / MD2 / 4R satellites, as well as build, flight-test and commission the "Express-AM5 / 6 / AT1 / AT2 / AM7 / AM8 satellites. He has also supervised the work on the Express-AMU1 spacecraft. In 2012-2015, with direct participation and leadership of Yuri Prokhorov, these RSCC communications and broadcasting satellites were built, launched into orbit and commissioned for operations, ensuring a new level of quality satellite communications, television and radio broadcasting over the entire territory of the Russian Federation.
